Maggie Ruper considers herself a lucky gal. Before becoming a full-time instructor at harness cycle, she was a journalist. It was while living in New York City that Maggie transitioned to covering beats to dropping beats in a spin studio when she took a job with SoulCycle. It wasn’t just a career change. It was a shift in her identity.

 “I went from working in journalism to a break in my career path where I was really trying to figure out what I was going to do and I was,” she reflects.

With cycling, Maggie found something that not only strengthened her body and physical ability, but also expanded her emotional outlook on life thanks to the positive culture she found from spinning. However, it was her move home to Cleveland that Maggie began seriously considering spin instruction after her first class at harness cycle, which she says changed the trajectory of her life.

“Friends were the first reason I got into this, but it was the beat, movement, high energy and high sweat that kept me coming back!” she says. “What got me absolutely hooked was the inspiration and the vibe. There’s something about community and moving with others that just lights me up.”

Nevertheless, the path to enlightenment wasn’t without its hurdles. Doubt, excuse, opinions from others of what she “should” be doing with her life would creep into her psyche, and her purpose would waiver. To combat the negative associations she’d face, she worked on getting honest with herself and where her heart and passions lied. That’s when she said things started to fall into place.

The positive messaging she’d receive as a cyclist in class is now something she gets to share with the classes she leads 1O-12 times a week both in Hingetown and Downtown. Leading the pack for the last two years, she inspires her riders to remember that what they give and receive in the studio is not just confined to the room; they can take that intention and energy and lead their day-to-day lives with them.

She explains, “If we’re really present in class, mentally as much as physically, the strength & courage we gain can be put in to motion in other areas of our life. That’s the gift.”

Tell us a little bit about your story—are you from Cleveland?

I’m a born & raised Clevelander. Before fitness, I worked as a journalist and lived in cities across the region. I made the career change to indoor cycling a few years ago while living in NYC. When I moved home, I walked right into Harness & never looked back. My schedule is typically full, but free time includes restaurant hopping, time with friends & family, cooking & relaxing for sure!


Which harness studios do you teach at?

Both Hingetown & Downtown. I primarily teach midday & evening classes—I’m a full-time instructor, so you’ll find me on the schedule for 1O-12 classes each week.


How long have you been an instructor?

Almost 2 years


What drew you to harness/indoor cycling?

Friends got me into it, the beat, movement, high energy & high sweat kept me coming back. What got me absolutely hooked was the inspiration & the vibe. There’s something about community and moving with others that just lights me up.


How has cycling influenced or moved you?

It changed the trajectory my life. Not only did my body and physical ability evolve, but my mind and outlook on life expanded. From the authentic, powerful & positive messaging, I felt myself shift internally in ways I never have. I’ve said this in class.. “what we do in the studio is not confined to the room” If we’re really showing up & walking our talk, then those good vibes & strength can show up and be put in to action in other areas of our life. That’s the gift.
