building a vision for the neighborhood

Harness Cycle was founded by Cleveland native, Anne Hartnett, in 2013.

Before the robust development in Ohio City, Anne saw a need for a cycling studio like she had experienced in major markets. The first Harness Cycle studio opened as a pop-up in 2013, followed by a permanent home on the corner of W 29th & Detroit Ave in 2014.

The team saw early success as classes filled with eager customers who found connection to themselves, fellow riders, and the Harness Cycle values and mission.

Over the next four years, thousands of otherwise strangers became part of the Harness community. In 2017, Harness Cycle expanded to its second location on E 6th Street in Downtown Cleveland.

Year after year, Harness Cycle continued to create a positive impact in both neighborhoods with its vibrant following of active Clevelanders. The team expanded its offerings with weekly runs across the bridges, held pop-up yoga events on rooftops, in art galleries and vacant warehouses, brought groups out onto Lake Erie for paddle board races and became an advocate for a new kind of lifestyle in Cleveland.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in March 2020, the future of Harness Cycle changed completely. Both studios shut their doors and the brand pivoted to online offerings, bike rentals and apparel sales. For nearly 18 months the future of the business was uncertain.

Fast forward to 2022 when Anne toured another building in the same neighborhood as the original studio. She could see a vision for a new beginning not only for Harness Cycle to rebuild, but a home for other brick + mortar businesses to open and thrive together. With the help of many local leaders, the ownership for The Vitrolite building transferred to Anne and her team and they began renovations to push the space into a bold new direction while honoring its historic roots.

Now The Vitrolite is open to the public with Harness Cycle as the anchor tenant, alongside yoga studio Soul Yoga and Italian cafe Patron Saint. What began as a neighborhood fitness studio has grown into a neighborhood anchor where community gathers. Harness Cycle is home again in Ohio City.
